Swimming in Lake Balaton
Lake Balaton in Hungary is the largest lake of central Europe. It is 77 kilometres long and it takes up approximately 600 square kilometres. With it’s coastal line of roughly 200 kilometres and it’s surface are of 596 km ² Lake Balaton is one of the biggest lakes in central – and Western Europe. Because the water is quite shallow (1-3m), the water warms up quickly (in May approximately 17-19 degrees Celsius and in Summer about 26 degrees Celsius). The area is ideal for sunny beachholidays with children.
The municipality Badacsony consists of 5 villages and these are situated around extinct volcano Badacsony. De volcano is 438 metres high, on the southern slopes are vineyards, which are worth paying a visit. The flora and fauno of the nature reserve Badacsony consists of amongst others: wild orchids, ferns, lichens and other more or less rare plants. The basalt rocks are a paradise for snakes, salamanders and on the trees you’ll find szarvasbogar’s (stag-beetle). The birdlife is also extensive and contains more than 175 different species, including falcons, woodpeckers, kingfishers and bluethroats.
Roughly 12 kilometres from Badacsonytomaj you reach Tapolca (18.000 inhabitants). The most interesting part of this you’ll find, suprisingly, under the ground. A cave system can be found under the streets and houses of Tapolca. In the cave are countless impressive passages, dripstones and an underground lake (opening hours, entrance Kisfaluday utca 2, April-May Tuesday-Sunday 10.00-17.00, June- Aug all days 10.00-18.00, Sept-Oct Tuesday-Sunday 10.00-17.00). A second notable sight of Tapolca is Mill Pond, which can be found near the cave.
Walking and cycling next to Lake Balaton
Spring and autumn are the most ideal times of the year to go cycling next to and around Lake Balaton. Nature is blooming and looks at it’s best. The temperature is not too high, approximately 20-25 degrees Celsius and the air feels light, because of the low humidity. Around Lake Balton is a flat, signposted cycle path, on which you have the opportunity to cycle, partly or completely, around the lake. At different places along the lake, like Szigliget, Badacsony or Tihany, you’re able to take a ferry to the other side and cycle back from the other side.
For the horse lovers we recommend the horse show in Salfold, a show you really shouldn’t miss, while on holiday in the cottage near Lake Balaton. There are different kind of shows with horses. It is situated in the National Park and nature reserve Balaton Felvidéki. Around this several riding-schools can be found.
Budapest is the capital city of Hungary. The city is the economic and cultural centre of the country. In just two centuries Budapest has grown from 50.000 inhabitants to a metropolis in which almost 2 million people live. With more than 4 million visitors a year Budapest is by far the most important tourist destination in Hungary. Concerning visits, it can match itself with Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Moscow. Budapest gets even more visitors than Prague, Berlin and Vienna.
Along Lake Balaton and on the hills covered in vineyars, one can find a lot of little wine cellars (borpince). You can taste the handmade wines and, if you want to, take some with you to bring home with you. Especially in Szigliget and Badacsony are a lot of wine cellars in a relatively small area. Famous, big wine cellars in the area are: Eszterházy pince in Szigliget and Festetics pince in Cserszegtomaj, in this last mentioned pince they also have folkloristic shows. There’s also a nice restaurant in it. In Badacsony you will find, among others, the Fata Pince, in restaurant Borbarátok.
The Queencity is, on first sight, a quiet and calm city. But, concerning recreation it has a lot to offer to it’s visitors. Apart from the cultural and archeological sights, Veszprem has some other interesting places to visit. Enjoy a family outing to the Veszprém Zoo, or for the winelovers, visit the vulcanic vineyards on the hills near the city.
Food and drink
Restaurants Just 1.5 kilometres from the house is a restaurant, where you can have dinner for low prices. Overal in Badacsony and it’s surroundings lots of restaurants can be found. Supermarkets Close to the holiday cottage you will find big supermarkets like Tesco and a Spar. Beside that there are several bakers and butchers. Doing groceries won’t be a problem.
